Motul DOT 5.1 Brake Fluids – High Boiling Stability & Lower Viscosity
DOT 5.1 is a glycol-based fluid that combines high boiling performance with relatively low viscosity, making it a strong option for modern ABS/ESC systems where permitted by the OEM. It is not silicone-based and therefore compatible with DOT 3 and DOT 4. For drivers who see long mountain descents, spirited road use or heavier vehicles with larger brake loads, DOT 5.1 can provide extra thermal margin compared to baseline fluids, provided the manufacturer allows it. As with all glycol fluids, DOT 5.1 absorbs moisture over time, so service intervals still matter; performance will decline if fluid is old or contaminated. A complete flush ensures the benefits are realised throughout the hydraulic circuit, including ABS valves and the proportioning module.

Quick Comparison – Where DOT 5.1 Fits
| Scenario | Spec Guidance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Performance street | OEM permits DOT 5.1 | Higher thermal margin, good ABS behaviour |
| Mountain/towing | Allowed by OEM | Resists fade on long descents |
| Cold climate | Lower viscosity benefit | Improves ABS valve response |
Buyer’s Checklist
- Confirm that your OEM permits DOT 5.1
- Replace older DOT 3/4 with a full flush to capture benefits
- Plan periodic changes—hygroscopic absorption still applies
- Never mix with silicone DOT 5
Fitment & Compatibility
- Compatible with DOT 3/4 (all glycol-based)
- Mixing is possible but lowers overall performance; flush for best results
- Ensure seal compatibility and follow the OEM bleeding sequence
- Allow extra volume for ABS actuation during service
Care & Service
- Use fresh containers; keep caps tight
- Prevent contamination by water, dirt or petroleum products
- Inspect for leaks at calipers, hoses and master cylinder
- Verify firm pedal and even braking after service

FAQ – DOT 5.1
- Is DOT 5.1 the same as DOT 5?
- No. DOT 5.1 is glycol-based and compatible with DOT 3/4; DOT 5 is silicone and incompatible.
- Can I switch from DOT 4 to DOT 5.1?
- Yes if the OEM allows it. Perform a complete flush and follow proper bleeding procedures.
- Will 5.1 improve pedal feel?
- It can maintain performance better under heat and assist ABS behaviour, but overall condition and pad/disc setup matter too.
- Is 5.1 suitable for track use?
- It’s better than baseline fluids, but dedicated Racing fluids typically handle repeated extreme heat better.
- How often should I replace DOT 5.1?
- Follow the schedule and shorten intervals for mountain driving, towing or spirited use.
- Does viscosity change over time?
- Moisture contamination affects boiling points more than viscosity; keeping fluid fresh preserves performance.
