Motul Greases – Correct Lubrication for Bearings, CVs, Chassis & More

The right grease protects against wear, water washout and corrosion while sealing out dust and grit. Choose by NLGI grade (consistency), thickener (lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, polyurea) and additives (e.g., molybdenum disulfide for sliding/EP loads). Wheel bearings need a high-temp, shear-stable grease; CV joints benefit from moly-fortified EP grease; chassis points and universal joints can use a robust multi-purpose; marine or water crossing duty calls for excellent washout resistance. Dielectric greases are used sparingly on electrical boots/connectors to exclude moisture—they are not conductive lubricants.

Before re-greasing, clean old lubricant and contaminants, inspect seals/boots, and avoid mixing incompatible thickener systems (for example, some lithium complex greases don’t mix well with clay-based). Pack bearings properly to fill races without overfilling hubs, and torque fasteners per spec. After water submersion or deep mud, shorten service intervals and inspect for milky grease indicating water ingress.

Quick Comparison – Picking the Right Grease

Application Recommended Type Key Property Notes
Wheel Bearings Lithium complex NLGI 2 High-temp/shear stability Resists long highway heat
CV Joints EP moly grease Extreme pressure, sliding Protects under high angles
Chassis/U-joints Multi-purpose EP NLGI 2 Water resistance Grease until fresh seals appear
Marine/Water Calcium sulfonate Washout & corrosion resistance Ideal for frequent crossings
Electrical boots Dielectric silicone Moisture exclusion Not for load-bearing parts

Buyer’s Checklist

  • Match NLGI grade and thickener to the assembly
  • Use moly EP grease in CVs and sliding joints
  • Choose water-resistant formulas for wet environments
  • Avoid mixing unknown greases—clean before switching

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Check compatibility charts when changing thickener systems
  • Protect rubber boots and seals from solvent cleaners
  • Do not use dielectric grease where lubrication is required
  • Torque bearings to spec; overpacking causes heat

Application Tips

  • Clean parts thoroughly; inspect for pitting or discoloration
  • Pack bearings by hand or with a cone packer until grease emerges evenly
  • Wipe excess and ensure vent paths aren’t blocked
  • Reinspect after water crossings; milky grease = water ingress

FAQ – Greases

Can I mix different greases?
Generally no—clean out old grease unless the thickener systems are known compatible.

What NLGI grade is most common?
NLGI 2 balances pumpability and staying power for many automotive uses.

Is moly safe for wheel bearings?
Moly is usually reserved for sliding joints; many wheel bearings use non-moly lithium complex. Follow manufacturer guidance.

How often to re-grease after water crossings?
Inspect immediately; shorten intervals if you ford regularly.

Should I fill hubs completely?
No—overpacking increases heat and can force grease past seals.

Is dielectric grease conductive?
No—it’s an insulator used to seal out moisture at connectors and boots.
