  • Check component ratings and standards; look for stamped WLL/MBS
  • Prefer soft shackles where possible to reduce recoil mass
  • Include a damper and gloves for safety
  • Choose a bag that fits your storage layout (drawer, rack bin, cabin)

Size, Rating & Fit Guide

Pick ratings based on vehicle mass and typical terrain.

  • Kinetic rope: 8–10t for mid-size 4x4s; 12–14t for heavy wagons/utes
  • Snatch strap: 8–11t MBS; 20–30% stretch
  • Tree protector: 2–3m length; 75–100mm width
  • Winch extension: 10–20m for reach; match winch rating
  • Shackles: 4.75t WLL steel or 10–12mm soft for most builds

Care & Durability

  • Rinse mud/salt; air-dry straps and ropes away from sun
  • Inspect soft/steel shackles, stitching and eyes before each use
  • Retire any gear with cuts, glazing, burns or deformation
  • Store clean and coiled in the supplied bag
  • Log heavy shock loads and replace items as needed

Upgrade Sequence Roadmap

  5. Round out with an Overland Kit for solo touring

FAQ – Recovery Kits

What’s included in a basic recovery kit?
Typically a kinetic rope or snatch strap, two shackles (soft or steel), gloves and a storage bag. Some add a tree protector.

Do I need a winch kit if I already have a snatch kit?
They serve different roles. Snatch kits are for dynamic pulls; winch kits add tree protectors, extension straps and rings/blocks for controlled winching.

Soft shackles or bow shackles in my kit?
Soft shackles reduce metal mass and are light. Steel bow shackles tolerate abrasion and heat around hardware. Many kits include both.

What ratings should I look for?
As a rule of thumb, choose MBS 2–3× your vehicle’s GVM. Match all components so the system rating is consistent.

Can I mix components from different brands?
Yes—provided each item is rated and compatible. Avoid unknown ratings and always check stitching, pins and eyes for fit.

How should I maintain my kit?
Rinse after use, dry fully, store coiled and clean, and retire any item with cuts, burns, rust or deformation.
